2010 USC Charity Ball
Lights, drinks, and friends… It was the night that many of us had anticipated, April Fool’s day 2009 where nobody was a fool. The costumes, the games, and the music, carried the night away while guests reminiscing some of the best quotes from The Godfather, the theme we picked for our last year’s event. More than four hundred of us were there, winning games, savoring good wines, and bringing home some beautiful paintings and a night or two of luxury vacations…
In our Charity Ball, AUSCI has chosen to collaborate with The World is Just a Book Away, in short, WIJABA (www.justabookaway.org), to make sure that every penny reached our cause. So several months later, in June 2009, with the proceeds from the guests at that very night, the first ten libraries were launched in Sidoarjo, the area that was hit hard by a mud flood disaster years earlier.
Professor James Owens, the WIJABA’s founder and a USC Professor, has a vision: to have a world where all children have access to books, a quality education, and a hope for the future. His main focus is to build libraries in developing countries – Indonesia being first in his list. Through our Charity Ball that you attended and helped support, a total of 30 libraries and 1 mobile library were built for 9000+ children from grade 1 to 6 in Sidoarjo in 2009 alone.
This year, we have an ambitious target of twice as many libraries in Padang, an area that was hit hard by a major earthquake last year. With that cause in mind, AUSCI is throwing its 2nd Charity Ball and inviting USC alumni and friends to share the "Hollywood Halloween” stage with us. In our 2nd Charity Ball, you can expect twice of everything, the fun, the crowds, and definitely, the booze!
So, spread the word and make yourself count. Let’s paint Jakarta red together for a great cause!

Dear Friends and Alumni of USC,
It is with tremendous pleasure that we welcome everyone to this fabulous joint event between Alumni of USC with Indonesia Tatler.
AUSCI, the Alumni USC of Indonesia association, is poised to move forward. We are excited that an increasing number of people, alumni and friends, are joining our “Cerdas Bang!” cause.
Our goal is to build 50 libraries in impoverished areas Indonesia by 2015.
Last year we’ve built, in cooperation with WIJABA (Word Is Just A Book Away foundation), 10 libraries in Sidoarjo. And this year, we are on track to build more libraries in Padang.
“Cerdas Bang!,” short for men-Cerdaskan Bangsa, was started because of a story. That story is one of kids in Sidoarjo having to learn English by reading instruction manual of VCD players.
Let's help smarten up our nation's children, and give them access to books, and "open" the world for them.
Since today’s event is celebrating the 10-decade anniversary of Indonesia Tatler, we are reminded of a motto that was used at USC during our alma mater's 125th Anniversary “Honoring the Past, Inventing the Future.”
We, you and me, have a say in what kind of future we have. Let's invent the best future possible, and take the first step by enjoying tonight's event!
Hundreds of millions of people around the world are illiterate or functionally illiterate. Billions of children have access to what can only be deemed substandard education, often in overcrowded facilities that are old, dilapidated, and unsafe, with little to no resources. Having a book—just one book—to take home at night and read is a dream almost beyond their imagination. Yet these same children have a thirst for knowledge that, if quenched, opens a world of possibilities. And we all have an ability to provide them with the books and the schools to open their worlds.
In 2008, I could not have imagined the tremendous outpouring of support The World Is Just A Book Away would receive in two short years. The organization was founded on the principle of empowering children and their communities through books, learning, and sharing the wealth that is knowledge. In 2009, our first full year of operation, we launched 22 libraries and one mobile library in Sidoarjo, Indonesia, benefiting over 10,000 children and providing over 20,000 books.
With work towards our goal of providing a deep impact in a specific community well underway, we are now able to expand our focus to include other communities where facilities and opportunities for learning and reading are scarce. In 2010, we will continue our support of the children and communities of Sidoarjo by furnishing the libraries and mobile library with additional books in Indonesian, books in English, and by launching libraries for parents. We also plan on launching libraries in the region of Padang, Sumatra, which was devastated by the earthquake, in order to provide hope through access to books in our libraries to the children of the region. Only through the generosity of our many donors and the dedication of our Board, Ambassadors, volunteers, partners and supporters in Indonesia can we help the children and communities of Indonesia living in times of crisis find the joy of learning.
I want to thank you all in advance for partnering with The World is Just a Book Away for helping us help the children of Indonesia. Through our collective work and through the pages of books, we will literally change the lives of children and help them realize that the world is, truly, just a book away.
